# Arazio — convert any file without leaving Finder

Arazio is a macOS menu-bar app that converts and edits files from the drag
itself. Pick a file up in Finder, hold a modifier key, and a radial menu
appears around the cursor showing only what that file can actually become.
Release toward one and the result lands in the same folder, beside the
original.

It is a paid, one-time-purchase app for Apple silicon Macs. It is not a web
service and never uploads anything.

## The three rings

Which menu appears depends on the key held during the drag.

| Hold | Ring | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| **Shift (⇧)** | Convert | Output formats this file can become |
| **Option (⌥)** | Tools | Edits that keep the format |
| **Control (⌃)** | File actions | Things to do *with* the file rather than to it |

## Conversions

296 conversions across 44 formats. Every one is exercised by
the test suite before a release ships.

- **Image**: AVIF, BMP, GIF, HEIC, ICO, JPG, PNG, SVG, TIFF, WebP
- **Video**: 3GP, AVI, FLV, M4V, MKV, MOV, MP4, MPEG, WMV, WebM
- **Audio**: AAC, AIFF, FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, Opus, WAV
- **Document**: CSV, DOCX, EPUB, HTML, MD, RTF, TXT
- **Pdf**: PDF
- **Archive**: 7Z, BZ2, GZIP, RAR, TAR, TAR.GZ, XZ, ZIP

## Tools

15 tools, each applying to the file types listed beside it.

- **Compress** — audio, image, pdf, video
- **Crop** — image, video
- **Edit Metadata** — audio, image, pdf, video
- **Extract** — archive
- **Extract Audio** — video
- **Extract Pages** — pdf
- **Flip** — image
- **Merge** — audio, pdf, video
- **Normalize** — audio
- **Remove Audio** — video
- **Resize** — image, video
- **Rotate** — image, pdf
- **Split** — audio, pdf, video
- **Strip Metadata** — audio, image, pdf, video
- **Trim** — audio, video

## File actions

Hold Control mid-drag. These do not care what the file is, so they work on
anything, including files Arazio cannot convert.

- **Copy** — Copy files to the clipboard, ready to paste in Finder.doc.on.doc
- **Copy Path** — Copy full file paths as text, one path per line.text.alignleft
- **AirDrop** — Share files and folders through the macOS recipient picker.dot.radiowaves.up.forward
- **Shelf** — Keep files on a shelf that floats above everything, ready to drag into another app.tray.full
- **Move** — Choose a destination folder and move the originals there.arrow.right.square
- **Terminal** — Open a folder, or a file's containing folder, in Terminal, iTerm2 or Warp.

The Shelf is a floating panel that stays above other windows and never takes
focus, so files can be parked while working in another app and dragged out
later. It sizes itself to its contents and empties when closed.

## Things worth knowing

- **Several images into one PDF.** Converting multiple images to PDF asks
whether you want one document or one per image, and only when both answers
are possible. Each page keeps its own image's shape.
- **PDF compression that keeps the text.** Compressing a PDF subsets its
embedded fonts rather than turning the pages into pictures, so the text stays
selectable and searchable. A document from Word, Excel or PowerPoint often
carries whole typefaces — thousands of glyphs for a few dozen characters —
and that is where the weight is. The result is rendered and compared against
the original before it is kept, so compression never changes how a page
looks. A scan with no text is compressed by re-encoding its images instead.
- **Crop presets** include 1:1, 16:9, 4:3, 9:16 and 16:10.
- **Batch.** Everything works on a whole selection, not one file at a time.
- **Originals are never modified or moved**, and an existing file is never
  overwritten.
- **Merging** joins audio, video or PDFs, with the order shown before it runs.

## Privacy

Everything runs on the Mac. The conversion engines contain no networking code
at all, and a test fails the build if a networking symbol appears in them, so
nothing being converted is ever uploaded. It works with the Wi-Fi off. Only
licence activation and update checks reach the network, and neither carries a
file.

## Requirements and price

- Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later
- Direct download, notarized. Not on the Mac App Store: the sandbox will not
let an app write to the folder a file came from, which is the whole product.
- **$14.99** once, from $19.99. No subscription. Regional
pricing in 217 countries, so the figure shown at
checkout depends on where you are.
- Every future version is included, major ones too. No upgrade fee.
- There is no free trial.

## Documentation

**Learn** — Six short lessons. Do them in order and you will know the whole app.
- [Your first conversion](https://arazioformac.com/docs/first-conversion): Convert a file on a Mac with one drag: pick it up, hold Shift, let go toward the format you want. The new file lands beside the original.
- [The three rings](https://arazioformac.com/docs/the-three-rings): Arazio has three rings on three modifier keys — formats on Shift, tools on Option, file actions on Control. What each one holds and when to reach for it.
- [Many files at once](https://arazioformac.com/docs/many-files-at-once): Select any number of files in Finder and convert them all in the same drag. What happens to a mixed selection, and where the results go.
- [The Shelf](https://arazioformac.com/docs/the-shelf): Drop files on the Shelf, carry on working, then drag them out into mail or any other app later. How to open it, clear it and move it.
- [Tools, not conversions](https://arazioformac.com/docs/tools): The Option ring holds tools that change a file without changing its format: compress, resize, crop, rotate, trim, split, merge and more.
- [Make it yours](https://arazioformac.com/docs/make-it-yours): Change which modifier opens which ring, where converted files are written, and how Arazio behaves in the menu bar.

**Everyday** — The things people actually open the docs for.
- [Convert images](https://arazioformac.com/docs/convert-images): Convert between HEIC, JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, GIF and BMP on a Mac, one file or a folder full, without uploading anything.
- [Convert video](https://arazioformac.com/docs/convert-video): Convert MOV, MP4, MKV, WebM and M4V on a Mac. When Arazio copies the video stream instead of re-encoding it, and why that matters.
- [Convert audio](https://arazioformac.com/docs/convert-audio): Convert MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, OGG and OPUS on a Mac, and pull the audio out of a video file in the same gesture.
- [Compress a PDF](https://arazioformac.com/docs/compress-a-pdf): Arazio subsets the embedded fonts rather than rasterising the pages, then checks the result pixel by pixel, so the words stay selectable.
- [PDF to EPUB](https://arazioformac.com/docs/pdf-to-epub): A PDF makes two different ebooks. Flowing text can be searched and resized; exact pages keep the layout. Which to pick, and why a scan has only one answer.
- [Edit metadata](https://arazioformac.com/docs/edit-metadata): Change what a photo, PDF, song or video says about itself — title, author, date, copyright — and remove the location a photo saved. Edits the file, not a copy.
- [File actions](https://arazioformac.com/docs/file-actions): The Control ring works on any file, including ones Arazio cannot convert: AirDrop it, shelve it, copy it, move it, or open it in Terminal.

**Setup** — Installing, buying and keeping it up to date.
- [Install Arazio](https://arazioformac.com/docs/install): Download, open the disk image, drag Arazio to Applications, and what to expect the first time macOS checks a notarized app.
- [Buy and activate](https://arazioformac.com/docs/activate): What you get for $14.99, how the licence key arrives, how to activate it, and how to move Arazio to a different Mac.
- [Updates](https://arazioformac.com/docs/updates): Arazio checks for updates and installs them itself. Every future version is included in what you paid, major ones too.

**Help** — When something is not behaving.
- [Keyboard reference](https://arazioformac.com/docs/shortcuts): Every modifier and shortcut in Arazio on one page: the three rings, the Shelf, and what each key does mid-drag.
- [Troubleshooting](https://arazioformac.com/docs/troubleshooting): The ring does not appear, a conversion is refused, the file did not land where you expected — the usual causes, and why none of them are permissions.
- [Privacy and permissions](https://arazioformac.com/docs/privacy): The conversion engines contain no networking code at all. What permissions Arazio needs and why, and what does leave your Mac.

**Reference** — a page per format and per tool, generated from the app's own capability list: 43 formats at `https://arazioformac.com/docs/formats/<id>` and 15 tools at `https://arazioformac.com/docs/tools/<id>`.

Every page above is also published as markdown at the same address with
`.md` appended — `https://arazioformac.com/docs/pdf-to-epub.md`, and so on. A complete
